The essential technical challenge facing us, and the world in general, is the complete beneficiation of cellulosic material.

We are aware of many R&D facilities that are trying to convert lignocellulosic components into ethanol and using the residue as a coal-substitute fuel source.  We are not, however, aware of any R&D groups that are focusing on adding value to all the components of lignocelluloses as chemicals that are articles of commerce (as opposed to potentially saleable ones, or curiosities).

DalinYebo Innovation Nucleus

We have developed a business proposal, derived from successful research, and based on our novel approach to converting, chemically, all the parts of agricultural waste, crops and other such resources.  To do that we propose a versatile laboratory and pilot plant complex dedicated to research, development, innovation and business development.  This unique facility could be based at any University (in our case we envisage it to be the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)), so that the usual services such as workshops, libraries and access to public funds can be combined with student assistance, bursaries and higher degrees.  The convergence of highly skilled and competent experts is most important. Thus, the DalinYebo Innovation Nucleus will be a unique and highly productive national asset and over the next 5 to 10 years generate new employment as part of multi billion rand sustainable businesses and as a direct consequence of our innovations. [NB: For the foreign visitors to this website The DIN concept is adaptable to other  countries. We envisage becoming one of the hubs in an global network of bioresources related knowledge production.]

Biobased Chemicals and Energy

The DalinYebo Innovation Nucleus (DIN) is a world-class centre for the invention, development and implementation of industrial processes to convert bio-resources into energy and chemicals.  In the first instance it will focus on the Complete Conversion of Carbon to Commercial Chemicals, aka ‘C5’ and energy.  C5 infers using all the organic components of agricultural by-products or crops, such as sugars, cellulose, hemi-cellulose and lignin and metabolites derived therefrom to produce chemicals through unit processes that it will invent or apply. The remaining residue from such process will be converted to energy (steam/electricity). Conceptualising and executing such projects requires an interdisciplinary approach.  Conventionally, specialists are housed in discipline silos, speak different technical languages and as a result the three essentials of communication, cooperation and holistic project completion are often sub-optimal.  So, resulting partially from the experience of the DalinYebo team in successfully developing and commercialising the novel SupraYield® process over the last five years, it has become clear that project concept-to-market times need to be brought down to acceptable levels.  One-way of doing this is to encourage interaction by housing key discipline leaders together in a single facility: the DalinYebo Innovation Nucleus.

Background

In February 2007, Prof. Prof. Ahmed Bawa (Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research Knowledge Production & Partnerships), University of KwaZulu-Natal) introduced DalinYebo to the CEO of the newly formed UKZN Innovation (Pty) Ltd with the following words:

“I met with Philipp Steiner (to whom I have copied this e-mail) who runs a technology development company in the furfural area and has been working with the University for some time now. I would deeply appreciate it if you would meet with him about the possibility of setting up a broader platform that he has some ideas on.

In addition I have chatted with him about the possibility of establishing an Innovation Fund grant proposal.
