Engineering Studies and Concept Plan

 Project SUMMARY

DATE(S): Various studies since 2005 (Concept plan in 1Q14).

DESCRIPTION/FEATURES:  There are basically three different location in a cellulosic process where furfural can be made or is made and could be removed, economically. Depending on location and configuration of the biorefinery, before tax IRR of ±30% can be expected with payback periods of less than 3 years. In certain configurations, there is an additional positive impact on the CO2 foot print of the biorefinery.

OUTCOME: Citing “strategic misalignment”, cellulosic ethanol pioneers advise us that furfural co-product option is not high on their lists of priorities. However, furfural is central to the µ-BioRefinery™ (see link below).

STATUS QUO: Furfural is central to the µ-BioRefinery™ (see link below).

Background

Since 2005 we have had interactions with several North American, European and Scandinavian developers of cellulosic ethanol processes about ‘furfural’.
