Furfural is a US EPA registered pesticide that can be used in the control of root infesting nematodes and has the potential to be a substitute for soil fumigants and sterilants such as methyl bromide. Furfural is ubiquitous in nature and widely found as a natural component in raw and processed foods. It is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) as a food flavoring agent and has also been used with significant environmental benefits as a new and effective crop protection agent. When employed for similar uses, the characteristics of furfural based products, such as acute toxicity, ecological toxicity, and environmental fate compares favourably in comparative assessments to other liquid nematicidal products and soil fumigants.
