(Furfural) Biorefinery 101: Start Simpler

Keep it simple! Making furfural is not rocket science. It's all about the integrating furfural production into the mass and energy balance of a pulp or sugar mill,

Integrate Furfural Production into Pulp or Sugar Mills

Over the years, there have been many interesting (academic) biorefining concepts, like the ones referenced below. Like many researchers, they report that “Furfural is (a) Promising … chemical” and in their (re-)search for more efficient process technologies overlook that making furfural is not rocket science.

DalinYebo Commentary:

Over the years, there have been many interesting (academic) biorefining concepts, like the one referenced below. Most researchers start their reports stating that “Furfural is (a) Promising … chemical“. The authors then continue with a statement about the production technologies being outdated and inefficient as the reason for their (re-)search for more efficient processes.

Our view on this topic: Keep it simple! Making furfural is not rocket science. It’s all about the integrating furfural production into the mass and energy balance of a biorefinery, pulp or sugar mill that will realise the “promises of furfural”.
